Below are photos of the grand opening of Adventure Playground in summer 1979. The images include photos of Gus Newport, who was Mayor of Berkeley at that time and Maudelle Miller Shirek, who served on Berkeley City Council and was Vice Mayor in that time period. Adventure Playground was created on the idea that children enjoy creating their own games and projects with found objects. The idea arose out of an observation during WW2 of how children played in the rubble in London after Nazi bombings. See the Rick Diamond interview in this collection for more information.
Huge thanks to Evie Vetterlein Wozniak and Gordon Wozniak for sharing these photos with us.
